Analysis of Serum Cholesterol in Patients with Age Related Macular Degeneration
Jung Hyun Park, Hyeong Gon Yu
Abstract
Purpose
To investigate the relation of serum cholesterol with the risk of age related macular degeneration (AMD) in Koreans. Methods: Serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol as well as Apo A-I and Apo B cholesterol were determined in 126 patients with AMD and in 106 controls. Results: The serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL cholesterol were not associated with the risk of AMD. However, HDL cholesterol was higher in AMD patients compared with non-AMD controls. Conclusions: The results suggest that elevated HDL might be associated with an increased risk of AMD. Lipid dismetabolism may affect on AMD pathogenesis, but differently compared to cardiovascular diseases. (Korean J Optom Vis Sci 2010;9(2):44-47)
