Rapid and Spontaneous Resolution of the Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome in a Young Patient

Abstract

Purpose: To report a case of rapid spontaneous resolution of vitreomacular traction (VMT) syndrome in a young patient.
Case summary: We encountered a patient with complaints of a sudden decrease in visual acuity in the right eye. Fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed to establish the diagnosis. Pars plana vitrectomy and internal limiting membrane peeling under general anesthesia was scheduled for approximately 2 months after our initial consultation. Fundus photography and OCT, revealed VMT syndrome with the formation of an epiretinal membrane in the right eye. VMT syndrome in this patient progressed rapidly and resolved spontaneously after 6 weeks without surgical treatment.
Conclusions: In our case, we report a case of VMT syndrome progressed and resolved rapidly spontaneously in a Korean young patient. The progression of VMT led to decreased visual acuity and metamorphopsia; However, the case findings suggest that an observation period of 2 months may aid in the spontaneous resolution of VMT, before surgical treatment is adopted.
